Sparrowfart Common is a community-focused arts center and recording studio run by Brooklyn musician and photographer Desmond White. The center is fronted by a hang out area/cafe where artists can congregate and break during long sessions. The studio is a mixed-use recording and arts space, combining a gallery and a fully-equipped performance space with grand piano, backline and recording/livestreaming capability. The center is also beginning to offer free community music classes for kids that don’t have access to music instruction at their schools.
Desmond initially set up the studio during the Covid-19 pandemic in order to live-stream jazz concerts and provide a space for musicians in which to perform during this difficult time. 30 full-length concerts were streamed, the majority of which can still be found here !
The center seeks to provide a venue and stop-in point for the local community, artistic and beyond, where artists of different disciplines can connect with other artists and the public alike.
